Kala Kosh’ Digital Archive for Traditional Craft Community

Intent
To use new digital technologies for traditional craft communities of India to enhance their craft practice. ‘Kala Kosh’ is a digital archiving system.

Design Process
Insights from the intense field work in Gundiyali, Kutch helped in understanding craft practices - belief and working systems. The research facilitated multiple ideas where new technologies and its applications could be designed for the advantage of craft communities. Based on proof of concept and rapid prototype multiple ideas were explored and one idea i.e. ‘Kala Kosh’ was selected to be designed and developed further.

Glimpse from the research stage :

The idea :
“Kala Kosh” ( in Hindi language Kala means arts & craft and Kosh means storage or archive), a digital archiving system where craftspeople could archive their designs was designed, prototyped and tested on field for 3 months with the pottery community of Gundiyali Village.

Entire concept of Kala Kosh was developed using open source tools, digital fabrication, holographic display & custom built 3d scanner and setup. This project is still in development stage and will soon be launched on open source platform so it can be used by any other craft cluster in India.
